AFC East Injury Review Training Camp Week 2

AFC East Injury Review Training Camp Week 2

Preseason games have begun and injuries continue to pile up during training camp around the AFC East. Each team continues to complete roster transactions and battle to keep guys healthy through padded practices trying to get everyone to Week 1.

Below are all the injury notes from around the division.

New England Patriots | Buffalo Bills | Miami Dolphins | New York Jets

New England Patriots

Camp Injuries

LB Matthew Judon (Undisclosed)

Judon has been working off to the side or limited since Day 1 with training staff with an undisclosed issue. He has at times gotten the pads on but has not been able to get through a full practice so far.

However, it was revealed that he signed a contract extension on Friday night which explains why he has minimized his contributions to avoid injury.

WR Kayshon Boutte (Undisclosed)

Boutte missed the July 30 practice for undisclosed reasons before returning to practice the following day.

OT Trent Brown (Undisclosed)

Brown has been working through conditioning drills since Sunday, July 30. He was unable to partake in the scrimmage at the stadium on Friday.

OT Cole Strange (Left knee)

Strange went down after a run-blocking drill, injuring his left knee on July 31. He has been unable to practice since then.

RB Ty Montgomery (Left leg/ankle)

Montgomery collided with LB Terez Hall last week and has not been able to practice since then, suffering a left leg/ankle injury.

DB Brad Hawkins (Lower leg)

Suffered a lower leg injury on July 31, missing Tuesday’s practice.

OL Chasen Hines (Undisclosed)

Suffered an undisclosed injury on July 31, missing the following day.

TE Scotty Washington (Undisclosed)

Suffered an undisclosed injury on July 31.

OL Jake Andrews (Undisclosed)

Andrews missed Sunday and Monday’s practice with an undisclosed injury, returning to practice on Tuesday, August 1.

LB Terez Hall (Knee)

He originally missed Tuesday’s practice with an undisclosed injury after colliding with Ty Montgomery and after missing an early portion of training camp before returning. Hall was later released on August 3 with a waived/injured designation. He can either revert to IR for the season or obtain an injury settlement and look to sign elsewhere.

WR Tyquan Thornton (Undisclosed)

Thornton was limited on Wednesday and Thursday with an unknown issue. Also worth noting that he has not caught a pass from Mac Jones as of publication.

LB/S Marte Mapu (Right pectoral)

Mapu is still working on returning from his pectoral tear in February, still wearing the red jersey. I expect him to ditch the jersey in the coming weeks.

TE Johnny Lumpkin (Undisclosed)

Lumpkin is wearing a red jersey in practice after first putting it on for the August 3 practice.

DE DaMarcus Mitchell (Undisclosed)

Mitchell has been limited this week due to an undisclosed issue but is seen working through drills here below.

PUP/NFI

OL Mike Onwenu (Ankle surgery)

Onwenu is still out following off-season ankle surgery after suffering an ankle injury in Week 18.

CB Cody Davis (Knee)

Davis is still out due to a non-contact knee injury in Week 6 last season.

OT Calvin Anderson (Illness)

Anderson is still working through an illness keeping him on the NFI list.

Transactions

WR Jalen Hurd– retired on August 1.

WR Thyrick Pitts– signed on August 1

WR Ed Lee– cut on August 3.

Buffalo Bills

Camp Injuries

CB Kyron Brown (Groin)

Shortly after signing with the team, Brown suffered a groin injury on Sunday, missing Monday and Tuesday practice before returning for Thursday.

WR Bryan Thompson (Concussion)

Thompson left with training staff on Sunday, later diagnosed with a concussion. He has been unable to practice since then.

DT Tim Settle (Groin)

Settle missed Tuesday’s practice with a groin designation following Monday’s practice. His absence was brief as he returned to practice on Thursday.

WR Isaiah Coulter (Knee)

Coulter suffered a knee injury that does not have any additional specifics past the designation, unable to practice all week.

QB Josh Allen (Lower right leg)

Allen has had two scares in practice this week when Allen went out for a pass and was tackled by Taron Johnson. He was slow to get up and appeared to have the wind knocked out of him.

The other instance was when Allen was kicked in his right lower leg during team drills. He kept looking at his right lower leg and at one point, removed his shoe. He limped around a little bit after but was able to improve his walking as he progressed through the day.

OT Spencer Brown (Back)

As the tweet shows above, Brown appeared to have some discomfort following practice, unable to bend down to grab his helmet. Hopefully, this was just a spasm following a long practice, but something to monitor after he had microdiscectomy surgery in May of 2022.

Fortunately, he suited up on Friday during the scrimmage at the stadium suggesting that this was a big nothing burger.

LB Matt Milano & CB Taron Johnson (General soreness)

Both were held out of the scrimmage Friday due to what the team termed as general soreness. That is a phrase used frequently during training camp and has covered some significant injuries at times. I don’t believe there to be anything of concern for either player, but until we get more info on each player, this will be something to monitor.

DT Ed Oliver (Right groin)

Oliver missed a portion of Friday’s scrimmage and was even seen in the medical tent, but did not receive a designation. However, clues from earlier in the week may signal what he is dealing with.

Oliver can be seen with a wrap on his right groin area at the end of the video below.  You can see the screenshot easier above, but it’s possible he could have tweaked the groin again and then shut him down to be safe.

Observations

G Ryan Bates (Left leg)

Bates was wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg during Monday’s practice but did not miss any time or have a designation.

DE Shane Ray (Left calf)

Ray has been wearing a piece of KT tape on his left calf, not missing anytime.

OT Dion Dawkins (Right leg)

Dawkins had to wear a compression sleeve on his right leg on Monday but did not have to wear it on Tuesday.

LS Reid Ferguson (Undisclosed)

According to Locked On Bills host Joe Marino, Reid Ferguson missed Monday’s practice but was able to return for Tuesday’s practice. If Ferguson were to miss any time, AJ Epenesa is the backup long snapper.

PUP

LB Tyler Matakevich (Right calf)

Matakevich remains on PUP with a right calf injury likely sustained the week prior to training camp. I expect him to be activated next week based on historical timelines.

LB Von Miller (Right knee)

Miller continues to battle back from his right ACL tear suffered on Thanksgiving last season. His straight-line running continues to look good as he rehabs, but cutting and bending the edge is lacking at times.

He has posted that he “is close” but it remains to be seen if the team activates him during training camp. He is approaching the nine-month mark on August 6 and ten months will be just prior to Week 1. If he gets activated, this will be an exceptional progression through rehab.

DT Jordan Phillips (Right shoulder/left leg)

Phillips has been able to ditch the right arm sleeve but is now working through a left groin/quad issue based on the tape in the pictures below. He may be nearing a return, but until the soft tissue issues resolve, he may be delayed in passing his physical.

Miami Dolphins

Camp Injuries

DE Jaelan Phillips (Lower left leg)

Phillips was able to return to practice on Sunday, July 30 after missing several practices due to getting stepped on during the first day of training camp. The team was not concerned about his injury but wanted to hold him out to prevent it from getting worse.

WR Jeff Wilson (Undisclosed)

Wilson was not seen at practice on Sunday according to reports but no updates have been given since then. It appears that he returned to practice this week.

CB Jalen Ramsey (Left knee)

Ramsey underwent surgery on July 28 and was initially seen at practice on his crutches nearly every day as he recovers. He has since removed the crutches and is walking without them with full weight bearing.

FB John Lovett (Undisclosed)

Lovett was waived/injured on August 4 after spending all of last season on injured reserve. I haven’t seen any reports regarding his original injury or what his latest injury is. He has not played since 2020 for Green Bay.

PUP

OT Terron Armstead (Right Knee)

Armstead was removed from PUP following his right knee surgery that required a clean-out.

OL Isaiah Wynn (Foot)

Wynn was removed from PUP on July 30 following an off-season foot injury.

CB Nik Needham (Achilles)/TE Tanner Connor (Undisclosed)

Both are still working back from their respective injuries and have not been able to pass their physicals yet.

Transactions

CB Eli Apple– signed on July 30 to fill in while Jalen Ramsey is out.

P Michael Turk– cut on August 2.

S Myles Dorn– signed on August 3.

S Bennett Williams– waived with an injury designation and placed on IR on August 3.

LB Mike Rose– signed on August 3.

FB John Lovett– waived/injured on August 4

CB Mark Gilbert– signed August 4.

New York Jets

Camp Injuries

DE John Franklin-Myers (Groin)

JFM suffered a groin injury on July 26 but was able to return to practice on July 30.

OT Mekhi Becton (Right knee)

Becton has at times been limited due to right knee soreness due to back-to-back surgeries on his right knee over the past two seasons. He was able to play in the preseason opener on Thursday for seven reps, down from the 20-25 reps they were expecting him to play. He continues to require a lengthy ramp-up period to ensure that he does not have any setbacks. He has said that this is his “new normal” when it comes to playing. Hopefully, this doesn’t rob him of the elite play that made him a first-round selection.

WR Garrett Wilson (Right ankle)

Wilson continues to miss practice following a right low ankle sprain on July 27 and has not practiced since then.

Preseason game injuries

CB Brandin Echols (Hip)

Echols had to leave midway through the game due to a hip injury, unable to return.

LB Chazz Surratt (Hamstring)

Surratt had to leave the game midway through after suffering a hamstring injury.

LB Hamsah Nasirildeen (Neck)

Nasrildeen was forced to leave the game in the first half due to a neck injury.
