Shoring up the safety room with the recent injuries to Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop, the Buffalo Bills signed S Terrell Burgess to a one-year deal on Tuesday after working him out on Monday.
In a corresponding move, they released P Jake Browning to make room.
Burgess comes to Buffalo after stops with the Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants, and Washington Commanders. He has bounced around, now on his fourth team in five years and looks to establish himself in Buffalo. Burgess comes in with several injuries and has appeared in 43 career games, also winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2022.
Below is Terrell Burgess’s publicly reported injury history and analysis.
Injury History
2020 Los Angeles Rams
Left ankle fracture, Week 7, missed 11 games.
Burgess’s rookie season ended halfway through the season on Monday Night Football in the fourth quarter. This was the result of a David Montgomery run that caught Burgess and trapped his left leg under him, snapping his ankle.
He required surgery and missed the remainder of the season.
2021 Rams
No publicly reported injuries.
2022 Rams/New York Giants
No publicly reported injuries.
2023 Giants/Washington Commanders
Undisclosed injury, Failed physical designation, placed on PUP, later waived.
Burgess was waived with a failed physical designation for an undisclosed injury in early May after signing a futures deal with the Giants. He was later picked up by the Commanders later that month and spent the remainder of the season with them either on the practice squad or active roster.
Injury Analysis
There isn’t much to Burgess’s injury history outside of the ankle fracture back in 2020. The undisclosed injury is notable but considering he was waived in early May and later passed a physical at the end of the month indicated that his injury was minor. Neither injury appears concerning long term as he begins his stint with the Buffalo Bills.
Injuries won’t hold Burgess back, rather, it will be his talent and ability to make the roster. With Mike Edwards being out for the next few weeks and the unknown status of Cole Bishop, this gives Burgess plenty of reps to make his mark.
I wish Terrell Burgess the best of luck and to remain healthy this season.
