AFC East Training Camp Injury Review: Week 5

The 2024 preseason wrapped up Sunday night as each team around the AFC East began to formulate their 53-man rosters. Each team will also begin to decide who to place on their injured reserve and injury settlements. Many of the injuries below alter each teams plans moving forward.

Miami Dolphins | New York Jets | New England Patriots | Buffalo Bills

Miami Dolphins

PUP

WR Odell Beckham (Undisclosed)

OT Isaiah Wynn (Undisclosed)

LB Cameron Goode (Patellar Tendon)

DE Bradley Chubb (ACL)

Analysis

Beckham has missed all of training camp due to an undisclosed issue and virtually no information has been provided to even the body part he is dealing with. The team remains committed to him potentially playing Week 1, but until he gets activated, it’s anyone’s guess.

Injury Updates

C Aaron Brewer (Right Hand)

Brewer continues to sit out with a right hand injury originally sustained on August 7. He has been seen with a brace and wrap on his hand at different times. It’s not clear what he is working through. Considering this is his snapping hand, they need to make there is no residual deficits or that he is risking the chance to reinjure yourself.

WR Tyreek Hill (Right Wrist)

Hill suffered a right hand injury sometime last week, potentially on August 19 as he was spotted the next day with a wrap on the right wrist.

WR Jaylen Waddle (Undisclosed)

Waddle continues to intermittently miss time due to smaller, nagging injuries. It’s been difficult to keep track of whether he is a full participant or off to the side. It sounds like the team is trying to save his reps for the season due to all the injuries he dealt with last season.

DT Benito Jones (Undisclosed)

Jones has been out since last week on August 21 with an undisclosed injuries but potentially could be in ready for Week 1.

S Jordan Poyer (Right Thumb Fracture)

Poyer downplayed his thumb ailment stating he has played much with much worse injuries and even if the thumb is not fully healed, he will still wear a club and play.

RB Chris Brooks (Concussion)

Brooks suffered a concussion during the second preseason game and was placed in the concussion protocol. He did not play in the final preseason game as a result, missing the last week.

WR Braylon Sanders (Lower Body)

Sanders suffered a lower body injury during the second preseason game, was deemed week-to-week and did not play in the final preseason game.

WR River Cracraft (Upper Body)

Cracraft suffered an upper body injury during the second preseason game and could be an option for short term IR to begin the season.

CB Cam Smith (Right Hamstring)

Smith is still recovering from his right hamstring strain suffered during the second preseason game. With the time between the second preseason game and Week 1, he could be ready to go.

S Jevon Holland (Undisclosed)

Holland’s injury issues have been secretive all training camp as he works through his day-to-day injury that has been going on for the last two to three weeks.

WR Erik Ezukanma (Left foot/ankle)

Ezukanma has been battling injuries all training camp, different from the neck injury he dealt with last year. He returned to practice on August 12 but suffered a left foot/ankle injury during the second preseason game. Whether this was related to the previous injury is unclear.

CB Jalen Ramsey (Undisclosed)

Ramsey has been dealing with some issues since August 14 but should be ready for Week 1.

WR Jeff Wilson Jr (Nose)

Wilson suffered a broken nose at some point and required surgery but from what I could find, he did not miss any practice time.

DT Brandon Pili (Undisclosed)

Pili suffered an injury in the first half of the final preseason game.

WR Anthony Schwartz (Undisclosed)

S Patrick McMorris (Right Foot/Ankle)

It’s not clear when McMorris suffered the injury but he is week-to-week with a right foot/ankle injury when he was seen with a boot before the final preseason game.

WR Malik Washington (Undisclosed)

Injured Reserve

OL Sean Harlow (Knee)/WR Willie Snead (Undisclosed)

Harlow suffered a knee injury when Mike White fell into his knee during the second preseason game.

LB Ezekiel Vandenburg (Leg)

Vandenburg suffered a leg injury during the first preseason game before getting waived/injured back on August 19.

New York Jets

WR Mike Williams (ACL)

Williams continued to ramp up his workload towards Week 1 as he works his way back from his ACL tear from last season. This is expected for his recovery and the correct approach.

CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse (Groin)/DT Leki Fotu (Hamstring)/CB Isaiah Oliver (Undisclosed)

All suffered their respective injuries during the second preseason game and was shut down for the remainder of the preseason

TE Jeremy Ruckert (Concussion)

Ruckert missed the second preseason game due to a concussion sustained earlier in the week and returned on August 19.

OT Ola Fashanu (Strained Elbow)

First round pick Fashanu suffered a strained elbow and missed the joint practices with the New York Giants. This should not linger into the regular season.

RB Michael Carter (Ankle)

Carter has been out with an ankle injury since August 3 and is slowly on track to return. Considering the timeline, he may have suffered a high-ankle sprain.

OL John Simpson (Undisclosed)

OL Max Mitchell (Shoulder)

Mitchell suffered a shoulder injury during the third preseason game.

G Xavien Newman (Shoulder)/TE Kenny Yeboah (Groin)

It’s worth noting that Yeboah missed a significant chunk of last year due to a hamstring strain at the beginning of the season.

Injured Reserve

WR Malik Taylor (Undisclosed)

New England Patriots

PUP

LB Sione Takitaki (Knee Scope)

OL Cole Strange (Left Patellar Tendon)

WR Kendrick Bourne (Right ACL Tear)

Analysis

The only surprise here is Takitaki as he had his knee scoped which is why he was unable to pass a physical. Based on the timeline we’ve seen, it sounds like he had the knee scoped right before training camp which is why he has not been activated yet.

As for Strange and Bourse, both should start on IR with Bourne hopefully coming off after the minimum four game stint.

Injury Updates

TE Austin Hooper (Undisclosed)

Hooper left practice on Saturday August 17 before returning Monday August 19 due to an undisclosed injury.

OT Vederian Lowe (Hip/Low Back)

Lowe left practice on August 21 grabbing at his hip/low back area and was unable to return for the remaining practice, missing the final preseason game.

S Marte Mapu (Undisclosed)

Mapu continues to miss practice dating back to Day 2 of camp and has not appeared in any preseason games with an undisclosed issue.

OL Sidy Sow (Ankle)

QB Jacoby Brissett (Right Shoulder)

Injured Reserve

WR JaQuay Johnson (Left Knee)

After suffering a left knee injury during the second preseason game, Johnson was sent to IR, potentially ending his season.
