AFC East Post Cutdown Injury Review

AFC East Post Cutdown Injury Review

Roster cutdowns have taken place moving each AFC East team to their initial 53-man roster for 2024. Even before the first snap, plenty of players will not play this season due to roster management decisions or have their debut delayed as they need more time to recover. Below are all the injury updates around the division as each team gets ready for Week 1.

Miami Dolphins | New York Jets | New England Patriots | Buffalo Bills

Every player that starts on the regular season PUP/IR list must miss a minimum four games to start the season. Once they begin practice, they have a 21 day window to return to the active roster otherwise they are placed back on injured reserve, ending their season.

Miami Dolphins

Regular season PUP

LB Cameron Goode (Patellar Tendon)

WR Odell Beckham Jr (Undisclosed)

LB Bradley Chubb (ACL)

OL Isaiah Wynn (Quad)

None of these players were expected to start the regular season other than Odell Beckham Jr so there were not any real surprises there. Ultimately, the Dolphins decided to start Beckham on the PUP list to start the regular season after they revealed he had a procedure. This is the first known instance that they’ve revealed why he’s been out so long.

He will be out the first four games and then can be activated to practice immediately after the fourth game. Regardless of my fan affiliation, this does piss me off that the team has been so cagey about his status. I understand why but indicating a player had a procedure isn’t going to reveal any state secrets. We’ll see when he makes his Dolphins debut.

Injured Reserve- Season

LB Wyatt Ray (Undisclosed)

RB Chris Brooks (Concussion)

WR Anthony Schwartz (Left Knee)

OT Ryan Hayes (Undisclosed)

WR Braylon Sanders (Lower Body)

All were placed on injured reserve before cut-down days which means the only way they’ll play this year is if they receive an injury settlement.

Update: Chris Brooks received an injury settlement and was released.

Injured Reserve- Can Return

CB Cam Smith (Right Hamstring)

Smith has been out since suffering a right hamstring strain on August 17. On the final day for cut downs, he was placed on IR with a designation to return. He likely didn’t need that extended timeframe, but considering how slowly he has adapted to the defense in his career, this allows him to learn and get healthy rather than continuing to struggle to play.

WR River Cracraft (Upper Body)

Cracraft suffered an upper-body injury during the second preseason game and has been out of practice since then. He was placed on IR-designated to return which means he will count towards one of the eight spots to return but can return after four games.

S Patrick McMorris (Right Ankle/Foot)

McMorris was placed on injured reserve following roster cutdown day which means he can return after a minimum of four games. He was spotted with a boot on his right foot before the third preseason game and that is all that is known at this time.

Injury Updates

DT Benito Jones (Undisclosed)

Jones has been out since August 14 with an undisclosed injury originally deemed day-to-day. He returned to practice on August 29.

LB Anthony Walker (Undisclosed)

Walker was out since August 1 with an undisclosed injury though it’s entirely possible he returned within the last week to practice.

WR Tyreek Hill (Right Hand)

Hill has been dealing with a right-hand injury that has required at least a wrap on the area since August 19. He has been in and out of practice since then.

CB Jalen Ramsey (Undisclosed)

Ramsey has been out since August 14 with no new updates.

S Jevon Holland (Undisclosed)

Holland has been in and out of practice since at least August 7 and was deemed day-to-day on August 14. It was reportedly something minor but this continues to keep him out with the hopes he’s ready for Week 1.

C Aaron Brewer (Right Hand)

Brewer originally suffered his right hand injury on August 7 and there has been uncertainty as to whether he will be ready for Week 1. Given the timeline and his right hand being his snapping hand, it sounds like he suffered a broken hand.

RB Jaylen Wright (Undisclosed)

Wright suffered an injury on August 15 and was intermittently held out of practice, most recently on August 29.

LB Quinton Bell (Undisclosed)

Bell missed practice on August 29 with a new undisclosed issue.

DL Calais Campbell (Undisclosed)

Campbell missed practice on August 29 for what could have been a veteran rest day.

WR Jaylen Waddle (Undisclosed)

Waddle has been in and out of practice more times than I can count over the preseason. He was spotted in a red non-contact jersey on August 29 but has not had any specifics about his exact injury.

TE Tanner Conner (Undisclosed)

Conner originally suffered an injury on August 9 during the first preseason game and was most recently spotted in a red non-contact jersey on August 29.

New York Jets

Injured Reserve- Can Return

DL Leki Fotu (Hamstring)

Fotu suffered a hamstring strain during the second preseason game and while he would have been ready for Week 3, the team elected to put him on injured reserve.

QB Jordan Travis (Ankle Fracture)

Travis continues to work back from his ankle fracture suffered last season at Florida State. The team has suggested that he may sit out the entire season as a redshirt year.

TE Kenny Yeboah (Groin)

Yeboah is slated to miss the next four weeks of the season on injured reserve as he works through a groin injury suffered in the third preseason game.

New England Patriots

Regular Season PUP

WR Kendrick Bourne (Right ACL)

G Cole Strange (Left Patellar Tendon)

LB Sione Takitaki (Knee Scope)

The only one I expected to start on PUP was Cole Strange as he works back from his patellar tendon tear. Takitaki had his knee scoped at the beginning of training camp but he may have had a setback or the procedure was greater than what was reported.

Bourne starting on PUP is a mild surprise but the team has no business rushing him back quickly given the status of the team.

NFI- Can Return

DT Christian Barmore (Blood Clots)

The fact that Barmore was designated to return is promising as they may have figured out what was causing the blood clots. He still has a ways to go getting off the blood thinners and making sure that they don’t come back. There is still no timeline to return but this is better than not being expected to return.

Injured Reserve- Season

DT Armon Watts (Undisclosed)

Watts suffered an injury back on August 18 and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

OL Calvin Anderson (Undisclosed)

Anderson was briefly on the injury report OTA’s most recent as August 18 and was later released with an injury settlement on August 30.

Injured Reserve- Can Return

S Marte Mapu (Undisclosed)

Mapu will miss the first four games with an undisclosed injury dating back to the second day of camp.

Injury Updates

OL Sidy Sow (Ankle)

Sow missed time this week during practice after suffering an ankle injury in the final preseason game.

OL Veredian Lowe (Oblique)

Lowe suffered an oblique injury on August 21 and has been out since then.

LB Josh Uche (Undisclosed/)LB Christian Ellis (Head)

Both missed practice on August 29.
