Needing safety depth due to injuries, the Buffalo Bills signed S Tre Herndon to a one-year contract on Tuesday and released TE Matt Sokol.
Herndon comes to Buffalo after spending most of his career in Jacksonville before adding stops in New Orleans, New York, and Indianapolis. He appears to be a steady veteran who can quickly adapt and fill a depth need for the Bills while others rehab. Read below for a detailed injury history and analysis.

Herndon spent four days on the COVID/Reserve list before being activated prior to Week 15.

Knee injury, Preseason vs Browns, missed 3 regular season games.
Herndon suffered a sprained MCL in the first half of the preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. This forced him out of action for the next two preseason games and three regular season games before returning in Week 4 to start against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Herndon suffered a concussion in the first half of the Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals and was forced to miss the following week.

Buffalo Bills Injury Analysis
Herndon doesn’t bring a lot of baggage with him injury-wise, as noted above. A concussion, an MCL sprain, and a shoulder injury are the only reported injuries that can be found throughout his seven years in the NFL. None of the injuries are concerning as they have all been one-off injuries, and there does not appear to be a pattern of any worrisome trends.
He appears to be a steady veteran who comes in and contributes to a secondary that needs bodies immediately. With Cole Bishop continuing to miss time and Taylor Rapp still returning from injury, the Bills need a preseason body and a game plan if Bishop continues to be unreliable.
Right now, with all the injuries, Herndon has as good of a shot as any to make the roster as nearly anyone else. The next few weeks will determine where Herndon plays in 2025, but, realistically, he could be in a Bills uniform.
