Injury Analysis: Buffalo Bills P Mitch Wishnowsky

Injury Analysis: Buffalo Bills P Mitch Wishnowsky

After cutting their first punter Brad Robbins due to performance and placing their second punter Cameron Johnston on injured reserve due to foot/ankle injuries, the Buffalo Bills signed Mitch Wishnowsky on Tuesday.

Wishnosky comes to Buffalo after starting his career with the San Francisco 49ers before being released this offseason. He spent a brief amount of time with the Washington Commanders practice squad once the regular season started but was released two days later.

Read below for a full injury history and analysis.

2020 49ers

No publicly reported injuries.

2021 49ers

Concussion, Week 18, missed 0 games.

Wishnowsky assisted on a tackle during the second quarter of the Week 18 contest against the Los Angeles Rams. He suffered a hit to the head and was taken to the locker room to end his day. He was questionable the following week but was cleared in time.

2022 49ers

No publicly reported injuries.

2023 49ers

No publicly reported injuries.

2024 49ers

Knee Irritation, preseason, missed 0 games.

Back injury, Week 10, missed 8 games, placed on injured reserve.

Wishnowsky dealt with knee irritation during the preseason during the first few weeks of August but things calmed down enough to allow him to play in all the preseason games. It’s not clear which side was injured but considering both knees are involved in punting in different ways, it’s hard to say which side was affected.

As for his back, this was described as a flare up which could mean anything. Whether this was a disc or facet issue, a sacroiliac joint issue, foraminal stenosis, or radiculopathy also known as sciatica, or anything else, a flare up doesn’t tell us much. He was placed on injured reserve and missed the final eight games of the season.

2025 San Francisco 49ers/Washington Commanders

Buffalo Bills Injury Analysis

The biggest concerns from Wishnowsky is the knee and back issues as those are more recent and problematic. Unfortunately, there are minimal details as to the exact issues. It is important to note that he did pass physicals with both the Commanders and Bills but it’s not clear how long he will be needed while Cameron Johnston is out with his foot/ankle issue.

All we can hope is that the offseason allowed him to get fully healthy and have him avoid some of the issues that plagued him last season.

I would like to welcome Mitch Wishnowsky to Buffalo and to remain healthy this season.
