The Buffalo Bills brought back a familiar face in WR Trent Sherfield on a one-year deal on Thursday.
Sherfield comes back to Buffalo after leaving for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 followed by the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals in 2025. He has continued to show his versatility in the offense and on special teams which keeps him gainfully employed on an active roster.
Read below for a full injury breakdown and analysis.

Buffalo Bills Injury Analysis
Sherfield originally came to Buffalo in 2023 after a career year in Miami where he recorded 30 receptions for 417 yards and 2 touchdowns. He had 11 receptions for 86 yards and 1 touchdown during his lone season in Buffalo.
Since then, he has played on three different teams over the last two years, secured 11 receptions for 104 yards and 1 touchdown. Most of Sherfield’s work has been on special teams throughout his career. In 2024, he played in 63 percent of the Vikings ST snaps, in 2025, 63 percent of the Cardinals ST snaps, and 51 percent of the Broncos ST snaps.
Seeing what Sherfield has done since leaving Buffalo has been less than thrilling. When he came to Buffalo in 2023, he ultimately was a disappointment considering the season he came off of in Miami. As he comes back to Buffalo and reviewing his body of work just as a special teamer, that reframes the discussion on what he can be for this team. As WR5 or WR6, he takes that special teams role with occasional usage on offense, much like Tyrell Shavers did last year to many fans delight. Shavers also isn’t expected to return to play until at least the second half of the season even optimistically which is why Sherfield likely signed right now.
Sherfield is always available, plays special teams and can contribute to the offense. Either you pay someone that you know can do the job in Sherfield or hope you find a UDFA or late round draft pick to do the same thing for cheaper.
Overall, I can’t dislike the signing as it is. There is disappointment in what he failed to do last time, but expectations were different then. If he does the exact same thing he did the last three seasons and stays healthy like he has previously, then this works for the Bills.
I’d like to welcome Trent Sherfield back to Buffalo and that he remains healthy this season.
